ECOVIEW® Plus fabric blinds used on the Australian National Maritime Museum to reduce sun and heat.

Hunter Douglas Commercial roller blinds

The Australian National Maritime Museum faced a common dilemma – too much sun was coming into the reception and terrace areas in the afternoon, causing internal discomfort and a greater reliance on artificial cooling systems.

Paul Scott from Turner Bros, a Hunter Douglas Commercial reseller, met with the Australian National Maritime Museum to discuss a solution for the foyer and the terrace.

“Upon meeting it was clear that the museum was concerned about the heat and glare that was coming into the building, however they also didn’t want to compromise on the iconic Sydney outlook or the level of light,” Scott explains.

“We recommended Hunter Douglas Commercial Roller Blinds in ECOVIEW® Plus fabric, a sunscreen fabric that stops heat and glare from entering the building. We gave a lot of thought to the colour recommendation and chose ‘Storm Midnight Linen’ – a darker neutral colour, as darker colours allow better view-through – and with such gorgeous waterfront views, this was an important aspect of the job.”

Scott says motorization was also a key part of the solution. “In the foyer there is a variety of window shapes, with the windows running in rows of four, making some blinds impossible to reach. Remote control motorization was recommended for all the blinds. After careful consideration was given to the budget, as well as future servicing requirements, we recommended linking the blinds so that we only needed to install one motor for every three blinds. This provided a significant cost saving.”

Turner Bros counted on its team’s extensive experience in servicing the commercial market to ensure the roller blinds were installed on time and to budget. By all accounts, the Australian National Maritime Museum is very pleased with the outcome. “Hunter Douglas Commercial is committed to the environment and is a member of the Green Building Council of Australia. As a leading brand in Australia, our customers have come to expect quality and innovation, and that’s what we delivered on this project,” says Scott.
