Laufen’s new ceramic allows SaphirKeramik basins to feature thin walls and defined radii and edges.

Laufen SaphirKeramik basins from Laufen

Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen has presented SaphirKeramik – refined basins with a delicate design language, and defined shapes and lines.

The name SaphirKeramik was inspired by the addition of the mineral corundum to the ceramic. Corundum occurs in nature in different modifications as a component of sapphire, and is also used in the watch industry as sapphire glass dials. Its hardness is only surpassed by that of diamonds. Likewise, the new ceramic is considerably harder and has a greater flexural strength.

Dr Werner Fischer, research director at Laufen, developed the SaphirKeramik together with his team and various university research institutes. The new ceramic is considerably harder and has a greater flexual strength, which is exhibited in entirely new washbasin designs.

SaphirKeramik turns the old material into completely new shapes: thin walls and closely defined radii and edges are now possible, permitting minimalist designs.
