The essence of wood: Elton Group surfaces
Item 005 by The Elton Group

The essence of wood: Elton Group surfaces

It is now well recognized that human health and wellbeing are enhanced by contact with nature, yet increasing urbanization means most city dwellers have little chance to interact with the natural world.

Research has shown that wood has positive psychological effects on people and a similar stress-reducing effect to nature. Bringing nature indoors through the use of wood brings with it the mental and physical benefits of being in touch with the living world.

Wooden surfaces make a room feel warmer and cosier. They also have a calming effect; improve air quality by modifying humidity; enhance emotional states and creativity; can lower blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels; and elicit feelings of warmth and comfort while also acting as a long-term store of carbon, helping to fight climate change.

Now that biophilic design principles acknowledge the importance of interaction with and exposure to natural materials, timber surfaces play an important role in the interior environment.

Elton Group offers a palette of timber veneer and wood-based surfaces to bring warmth, texture and vitality to any space. With an 80-year history of supplying veneers in Australia, Elton is committed to responsible forestry practices, sustainability, quality and beauty. Its products represent a balance between art and science.

From the signature Eveneer timber veneers through to unique WoodWall wooden wallcoverings and healthy plywood, Elton’s surface ranges encourage designers and specifiers to push boundaries with a curated collection of unique and innovative products. The company is committed to delivering exceptional environments.

Sourced from agricultural plantations and sustained-yield forests, Elton’s products combine traditional timber cutting with modern technology. New formats allow timber surfaces to be applied and detailed in innovative ways and with increased efficiency, to conform to curves and tight radii, or to cover large surfaces with consistent grain and pattern.

New research and technology also enable the most efficient use of the log, meaning fewer trees are used. The production process ensures a consistent surface free from knots, splits and discolouration, saving cabinetmakers time and money.

By collaborating with some of the world’s most respected designers, Elton has created unique, beautiful timber grains. Through its ongoing research into timber finishes, it continues to produce timber surfaces with an enhanced appearance and superior wear characteristics. eltongroup.com

Venture Plank wide plank flooring by Havwoods

Wide planks can deliver a subtle but significant impact on the feel of a space. Used in large areas, wide planks accentuate spaciousness, creating a feeling of grandeur. The quality engineered construction of Havwoods’ wide planks means that they are much less susceptible to cupping and bowing than traditional solid wood wide planks. havwoods.com/au/selection/wide-plank-flooring

Barbecue hotplate by Stoddart Town and Park
Item 039 by Stoddart

Barbecue hotplate by Stoddart Town and Park

After rigorous research and development, Town and Park has added a new barbecue hotplate to its product line-up. The hotplate is fully welded to avoid buckling, and it is manufactured out of 3 mm thick stainless steel to retain heat on the cooking surface and maintain quicker recovery times between uses.

Town and Park prioritized simplicity for the end user in all facets of its development process. Rather than angling toward a central drain hole, the new hotplate exhibits a gentle slope toward the rear of the plate, where the welded sides control the flow of oil to a drain hole. This feature enables more efficient cooking and cleaning because it allows the automatic draining of grease from the cook plate.

The new hotplate fits into any standard or non-standard bases currently used in councils throughout Australia. It can also be supplied pre-fitted into Stoddart’s own custom DDA-compliant frame, which is constructed for those in wheelchairs who can use the cantilevered design to position themselves close to the hotplates for easy cooking.

Nurture paint palette range by Taubmans

Informed by global influences and inspired by the changing and diverse lifestyles and landscapes of Australia, Nurture comprises four curated palettes to inspire and empower Australians to embrace colour within the home in 2020.

Government launches Visiting Architects Program

As part of the Tasmanian government’s Visiting Architects Program, Sydney-based architecture firm Fitzpatrick and Partners spent three days exploring Tasmania’s forests and learning about forest management, the Forest Practices System and sustainability certification. The architects also learned about Tasmanian timber processing and products and the applications for those products in both residential and commercial settings.

The program was a huge success and another session has been planned for May 2020. “We’ve all walked away with preconceived notions dispelled and our knowledge level just gone through the roof,” said Paul Reidy, a partner at Fitzpatrick and Partners. “They’re actually creating an asset for a future generation.” tasmaniantimber.com.au/stories/tasmanian-visiting-architects-program-highlights-sustainability-innovation-and-collaboration

Ecoply plywood geometric shelter
Item 062 by Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts

Ecoply plywood geometric shelter

The HexBox canopy, a collaborative project by students and researchers at the University of Kaiserslautern and the University of Sydney, achieves equilibrium through corresponding loads constrained by a given boundary. The timber shell is made exclusively of Ecoply components without the addition of any kind of metal fasteners for the main load-bearing structure.

Once all of the boxes were assembled, the shelter was quick to construct without formwork or prior expert knowledge. At 45 m2, the structure is exceptionally lightweight for its size and can be easily disassembled when required. ecoply.com.au

Perforated anti-throw screens by Stoddart

Stoddart was engaged to provide perforated anti-throw screens to the Hilmer and Forest Way pedestrian overpasses crossing Warringah Road in NSW. Stoddart incorporated 3D surveying and drafting techniques to ensure the panels were accurately manufactured to suit the geometry of the bridge.

Approximately 570 m² of cladding covers the two overpasses with graduated perforations providing a fading effect. This pattern was specified by the architect, who Stoddart worked with to ensure that the design intent was achieved. stoddart.com.au

Monash Conference Centre end-of-trip facilities
Item 064 by Saniflo

Monash Conference Centre end-of-trip facilities

Located at the Paris end of Collins Street, the Monash Conference Centre features amazing spaces, leading technology, award-winning food and a state-of-the-art end-of-trip facility. This facility provides bike storage, lockers and showers for commuters to store their belongings and get ready for work.

Initially, the area was used for storage, providing the project team with a blank canvas. Once it was identified that two showers were needed, the challenge that came up was plumbing. As the area is at basement level on a concrete floor, conventional plumbing was not possible.

To achieve the showers, Saniflo provided a greywater pump solution that could lift the waste water up to 3 metres vertically and 30 metres horizontally.

“The tenants are happy that they can exercise or ride to their office and have a shower before they begin their day,” said facilities manager Guido Ortiz. “The end-of-trip facility is a big selling point for prospective tenants, who always ask if there is an amenities room similar to this. It has definitely increased [the] tenancy rate.” pro.saniflo.com.au/casestudy
