PolyPad® tactiles in white balance safety and aesthetics at Port Melbourne’s Station Pier.

CTA’s PolyPad tactile indicators

Port Melbourne’s iconic Station Pier has recently undergone a facelift. CTA’s PolyPad® retrofit tactile indicators have been selected as the product of choice for this historical timepiece.

Doug McGuiness, asset engineer with the Port of Melbourne Corporation, said of the product: “CTA’s PolyPad® retrofit tactiles were used on the revamp of Station Pier because of their unique dimensions of 600 mm × 900 mm. This means that they provide fewer joints, giving a more seamless look to the project.” He adds, “Flexibility was a big consideration as they were being placed over a timber boardwalk which has some movement to it. We needed a product that could offer flexibility because of this.”

Station Pier has heritage overlays, so, even though the code for the disabled takes precedence over heritage considerations, there is still an effort made to retain an aesthetic balance between heritage and legal requirements.
