The AM-60 building in Brisbane city has a brick screen made up of 23,000 Bowral bricks.

Bowral Charolais Cream bricks

Architect Donovan Hill was commissioned to design the 20 storey AM-60 building in Brisbane’s CBD. The firm’s brief was to create a modern building that reflected the historical nature of the surrounding streetscape. The job involved the laying of 23,000 Bowral Charolais Cream bricks to create a screen that wraps around three sides of the building and is perforated to allow filtered light into the building.

“The decorative brick screen has an affinity with the small scale of the surrounding heritage buildings, with the added benefit of using materials and traditional trade skills that are uncommon on a commercial project,” says architect Kim Barber. The building achieved five stars under the Green Star design rating system.
