Celebrating excellence in Australian interior design in 2017
An ambitious, sculptural project with immaculate detailing has received the 2017 Premier Award for Australian Interior Design. Indigo Slam by Smart Design Studio was recognized alongside other outstanding homes, workplaces, public venues and installations at the 2017 Australian Interior Design Awards gala presentation, held on 9 June in Melbourne. The event was attended by more than 500 interior design and architecture professionals.
For fourteen years the awards have been celebrating excellence in Australian interior design. There are awards for Retail Design, Hospitality Design, Workplace Design, Public Design, Installation Design, Residential Design, Residential Decoration, Sustainability Advancement, Interior Design Impact and Emerging Interior Design Practice.
This year’s recipient of the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design also received the award for Residential Design. Indigo Slam is “defined as much by a sense of a thoughtful restraint, as it is by immaculate detailing,” said the jury.
The Award for Interior Design Impact recognizes the transformative effect of design, and was this year awarded to two projects. Woods Bagot’s Paramount by The Office Space is a serviced office described by the jury as “the kind of private nest that knowledge workers dream about,” while the First Peoples exhibit by Museums Victoria Design Studio elevates “a permanent exhibit into the magic and theatre … of a biennale pavilion.”
