Houses Awards 2022: Studio Bright’s Autumn House named Australian House of the Year

Australia’s most remarkable homes for 2022 were revealed at this year’s Houses Awards. The top honour, Australian House of the Year, was awarded to Autumn House by Studio Bright, a superbly executed, cohesive alteration and addition to a Victorian terrace house in Melbourne. The jury praised the “comprehensive design thinking” that underpins the project and also awarded it in the Garden or Landscape, House in a Heritage Context, and Alteration and Addition over 200 m2 categories.

The annual awards program, presented by Houses magazine, celebrates excellence in contemporary residential architecture and design across nine categories. Winners were announced at the State Library of Victoria on Friday 29 July 2022.

Other winners included Archier’s Corner House, which adapts a courtyard model with calm inventiveness, offering occupants both independence and connection; Always by Kennedy Nolan, a finely detailed coastal refuge that elevates the homeowners’ experience of an already spectacular site; The Hütt 01 Passivhaus by Melbourne Design Studios, a new home that sets a standard for practical and measurable sustainability; and Inala Apartment by Brad Swartz Architects, a reworking of a modest and outdated 1960s apartment that exemplifies the transformative power of design. housesawards.com.au
