Eat-Drink-Design Awards

The winners of the inaugural Eat-Drink-Design Awards were revealed at a presentation held at Melbourne’s Crown Metropol on Tuesday 23 October.

A 300-strong audience of designers and their influential hospitality clients attended the event, which celebrated the designers behind Australasia’s best eating and drinking experiences.

Encompassing high-end restaurants and bars, off-beat cafes and pop-ups, the awards recognize innovation and excellence in the design of eating and drinking experiences from across Australasia.

The 2012 Eat-Drink-Design Awards program recognized thirty-three projects. The winners are:

  • Best Bar Design – winner: Pretty Please byTravis Walton
  • Best Restaurant Design – joint winner: Spice Temple Melbourne by 1:1 Architects in association with Grant Cheyne
  • Best Restaurant Design – joint winner: The Apollo by George Livissianis Interior/Architecture
  • Best Cafe Design – winner: Third Wave Cafe by Tony Hobba Architects
  • Best Temporary Design – winner: Chasing Kitsune by Hassell and Schiavello
  • Best Retail Design – winner: Adriano Zumbo by Luchetti Krelle
  • Best Visual Identity Design – joint winner: D.O.C by ERD
  • Best Visual Identity Design – joint winner: Baker D. Chirico by Fabio Ongarato Design
  • Hall of Fame – Jimmy Watson’s Wine Bar by Robin Boyd and Frederick Romberg (designed in 1962).

A number of commendations across the categories were also presented. The 2012 jury was eminent food writer Jill Dupleix, the ”godfather” of Melbourne restaurateurs Ronnie Di Stasio, architect Roger Wood, design writer Rachel Hurst and Architecture Media’s editorial director Cameron Bruhn.

At the presentation, guests enjoyed Tanqueray’s signature gin with tonic, crushed ice and lime; fabulous wines from New Zealand’s Mt Difficulty Wines; and delicious morsels by chef Liam Nealon.
