Think Brick Awards 2014
Item 005 by Think Brick Australia

Think Brick Awards 2014

Australia’s richest design awards are now open for entry and architects are encouraged to enter their contemporary projects across five categories:

– Horbury Hunt Residential category for clay brick residential projects

– Horbury Hunt Commercial category for clay brick commercial projects

– Kevin Borland Masonry category for concrete masonry residential and commercial projects

– Urban Landscape Design category for clay and concrete masonry projects

– Roof Tile Award for concrete and terracotta roof tile residential and commercial projects

In 2014 a new award has been introduced for roof tiles. In association with the Roofing Tile Association of Australia, this category will honour Australian architecture designs using roof tiles. Another new aspect of this year’s awards is that due to architectural demand, the Kevin Borland Masonry award will include residential projects.

Nominated projects must have been completed since January 2012 and be located within Australia. The Roof Tile Award will allow projects completed from 2011.

With cash prizes of $10,000 for each category, the Think Brick Awards anticipate significant interest from all over Australia. Prize money has increased for each category in 2014.

A new twist to the 2014 awards is the introduction of the Grand Prix prize, which will be awarded to the best nomination amongst all five categories.

The overall winner of this award will also receive two return business-class tickets to the Venice Biennale in 2016, in addition to the cash prize for their category.

The Think Brick Awards encourages architects to consider the aesthetic, environmental and versatile features and implications of clay brick practice. This has now evolved to include the importance of concrete masonry and roof tiles for use in modern developments.

There is no fee to enter the awards. thinkbrick.com.au

New Colorbond steel from BlueScope Steel
Item 027 by BlueScope Steel

New Colorbond steel from BlueScope Steel

BlueScope has conducted the most rigorous testing program in Colorbond steel’s history to verify new enhancements in Colorbondsteel paint-colour durability compared with previous-generation product.

BlueScope product development portfolio leader Detlev Mueller says that to ensure that new Colorbond steel would perform well in Australian conditions, it was tested in several outdoor locations across the country for four years.

“Our testing program for Colorbond steel is unique in that our procedures replicate building applications in actual Australian conditions,” Mueller says.

“Our testing procedure includes samples of Colorbond steel being placed on what are dubbed ‘hot racks.’ These black, insulated boxes enable close simulation of the skin temperatures of real insulated roofs.”

Mueller says BlueScope’s rigorous outdoor testing is an important distinction between Colorbond steel and imported alternatives.

BlueScope national field performance manager George Thomson says new Colorbond steel’s improved corrosion durability and gloss retention, compared with the previous-generation product, have been verified through extensive accelerated testing at BlueScope’s Weathering Laboratory, where cyclic salt fog and ultra-violet light machines are used for complementary analysis. steel.com.au/create

Scyon Secura exterior flooring from James Hardie
Item 049 by James Hardie

Scyon Secura exterior flooring from James Hardie

Simple and fast to install, Scyon™ Secura™ external flooring can be used as an external structural flooring substrate for tile finishes over timber or lightweight steel floor joists. It can also be used as external substrate for tiled residential balconies and decks, as an alternative to particle board, plywood or compressed fibre cement.

Secura™ helps give peace of mind against moisture damage to balconies and decks. Secura™ exterior flooring is sealed on all sides with an advanced polymer coating that helps protect the board from moisture-related problems. A topcoat on the surface of the board provides good adhesion.

The continuous mesh reinforcement on the underside enhances the heavy-duty performance of Scyon, adding extra strength and impact resistance to deliver a suitable external residential flooring substrate.

For balconies that aren’t over habitable rooms – verandas, for example – no additional waterproofing membrane is needed once Securaexterior flooring is installed (a priming coat is recommended to be applied over all sheets before tiling, refer to the manual.) For balconies over habitable rooms, a waterproofing system needs to be applied.

Secura™ exterior flooring is now available in a thickness of 22 mm (2400 mm × 600 mm sheet size), suitable for 600-mm floor joist centres, meaning there is less joist, and installation is faster and more efficient. scyon.com.au

Stonini Profilestone Panels from Di Emme

Featuring practical, functional and aesthetic qualities, Stonini Profilestone Panels were used by architecture firm Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke for wall cladding in the Charlestown Square redevelopment in Newcastle.

Stonini Profilestone Panels in 3-D profiles Soulages and Nicci were used to clad the upper faces and ceiling beams of the project’s extensive walkways. Real stone was used to clad the columns but proved to be too heavy and not practical for the upper areas. Stonini’s lightweight composite panelling offered design, colour and installation flexibility. stonini.com.au
