ALUSION cladding from Robertson Facade Systems
Item 005 by Robertson Facade Systems

ALUSION cladding from Robertson Facade Systems

Converted from a century-old distillery in an industrial area on the southern edge of Milan, the new venue of Fondazione Prada is a visually striking building featuring a variety of unique exhibition spaces, a “haunted house” and a cinema. Designed by the Pritzker Prize-winner Rem Koolhaas of the Dutch practice OMA, the materially rich venue incorporates 6,800 square metres of ALUSION, a stabilized aluminium foam with virtually limitless design possibilities.

For Koolhaas, one of the most important goals for the project was to transcend the usual spatial typologies of art display by creating a great diversity of spaces. The highly versatile ALUSION, used on the facade, ceilings, rooftop and on all interior walls, was an integral part of achieving this. Produced by innovative material company Cymat Technologies and distributed by Robertson Facade Systems, ALUSION stabilized aluminium foam is visually striking, with a modern, dramatic appearance. It is produced by injecting air into molten aluminium containing a fine dispersion of ceramic particles. The ceramic particles stabilize the bubbles formed by the air, much like dry cocoa powder stabilizes bubbles when it is added to milk.

This process creates a material that is strong and lightweight, which is then formed into panels. Depending on the density of the materials used, ALUSION can be produced with small, medium or large “cells.” The surface of the material can either be left in its solid form, as produced, or it can undergo surface preparations that provide many different appearances, from a solid “shimmering” look to a translucent “water froth” look. The various versions of ALUSION can be used for both interior and exterior applications, as is the case at the Fondazione Prada centre. Recyclable, lightweight and with the structural qualities of aluminium, ALUSION offers a wealth of design potential. robertsonfacades.com.au/alusion

New hardwood flooring adhesives by Bostik
Item 011 by Bostik Australia Pty Ltd

New hardwood flooring adhesives by Bostik

In an era when many trades are looking to save time and costs, compromises can lead to a poor-quality end result and call-backs from dissatisfied consumers. Over the past 12 months, Bostik has introduced a new line of hardwood flooring adhesives that deliver time and project cost savings as well as a very high degree of quality, giving architects, builders, installers and clients peace of mind.

Using a newly patented adhesive development known as Axios Tri-Linking Polymer Technology, the two adhesives in the range save time and project costs by combining multiple products in the flooring system into one easy-to-spread and environmentally conscious mixture.

GreenForce is a two-in-one moisture vapour barrier and zero-VOC adhesive. Rather than installing a vapour barrier, allowing it to cure and then installing the flooring using a traditional adhesive, the installer simply has to prepare and clean the substrate, then use GreenForce to install the floor.

Ultra-set SingleStep2 takes things to the next level and adds an acoustic membrane to the mix for a three-in-one advantage. The membrane performs equivalent to a 3-mm acoustic rubber matting, creating more comfortable living spaces. It is ideal for installations in multi-storey residential developments. bostik.com.au

Mondéco Mirrazzo revitalizes Kelvin Hall

Flowcrete has worked with Scottish practice Page\Park Architects to refurbish Glasgow’s historic Kelvin Hall, supplying 1,600 m2 of the seamless resin terrazzo system, Mondéco Mirrazzo.

Visually appealing and hard-wearing, Flowcrete Mondéco Mirrazzo was applied over three floors in a light silvery grey colour that matched the interior design scheme. Light-reflective aggregates were incorporated within the flooring to convey a glittering, luxurious lustre. Mondéco Mirrazzo is designed to retain its aesthetic properties for the long term, despite heavy foot traffic and frequent cleaning. flowcreteaustralia.com.au

Stoddart perforated metal used at Wynyard Station

Stoddart perforated metal used at Wynyard Station

Stoddart perforated metal panels played a pivotal role in the creation of Wynyard Walk and the Clarence Street station entrance at Sydney’s Wynyard Station. Designed by Woods Bagot, the new entrance and walkway project incorporates more than 1,600 m2 of perforated metal in more than 1,500 panels, all fabricated by Stoddart. Wynyard Walk consists of a series of above- and below-ground urban interventions and links Wynyard Station to the western corridor of Sydney’s CBD. The project is based around the concept of “flow,” with the design language referencing the movement of water as a metaphor for the flow of pedestrians.

The stainless steel panels supplied by Stoddart were used for internal and external applications in the new entrance on Clarence Street as well as for the internal fitout of new portal entrances and tunnel lining works. The intricate patterns were executed in Stoddart’s factory in Karawatha, Brisbane, with 3D-modelling software used to ensure panels fitted into the pattern with precision. The project was the first stage of a $160 million upgrade of Wynyard Station. The station now features wider access points as well as new entrances from Clarence Street and Kent Street. stoddartinfrastructure.com.au
