COLORBOND® steel in sustainable building

The buildings of tomorrow

The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre in North Wollongong makes a bold statement about material choice and conceptual design, while achieving the Illawarra’s first six-star Green Star Building rating. It is also the first building in Australia to be accredited under the Living Building Challenge.

The design takes into account the coastal and bush surroundings, while using a selection of materials – including insulated steel panels and steel railway tracks – to create an aesthetic and unique character. In the high-bay lab, the roof is divided into two discrete sections. Each features a different colour, Surfmist® and Whitehaven®, both chosen for their high solar reflectance and thermal performance. The project was unified by the use of COLORBOND® steel, which is durable and resilient – like the natural environment.

COLORBOND® steel incorporates recycled content, supporting its excellent circular economy credentials. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is available for COLORBOND® steel which identifies the environmental impact of the product over its lifecycle.
