The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) was the first building in Australia fully accredited under the Living Building Challenge (LBC), as well as being the Illawarra’s first six-star Green Star Building. Design Canberra has announced the theme of the 2021 festival will be Transformation. After world changing events, history has shown that citizens, businesses and communities have responded with a celebration of life and gratitude and a burst of entrepreneurial energy.
The festival will run 8–28 November 2021 and, should lockdown continue, will present many programs online for a range of audiences and interests. Design Canberra’s highly creative team is currently working on a contingency plan with a range of online and safe outdoor options for the 2021 festival.
To connect with audiences who can’t physically make it to Canberra, Design Canberra is curating a Design Anytime program. The annual Eat Drink Design Awards supports innovation and excellence in the design of hospitality and retail premises serving or selling food and beverages. The program recognizes and celebrates Australia and New Zealand’s best projects, rewarding design achievement in seven categories.
The jury in 2021 includes Katie McCormack (restaurateur of Congress, Future Future and Lagotto), Anthony Gill (founder of Anthony Gill Architects), Sarah Cosentino (co-director of Studio Esteta), Matt Shea (editor-at-large for Broadsheet, Brisbane) and Cassie Hansen (editor of Artichoke).
The winners of each category will be announced on Friday 5 November. A report will be published in the November issue of Artichoke, online in the Eat Drink Design Awards Gallery and within other Architecture Media titles, both print and online.

Showing off secret places to architecture fans, mystery lovers and stickybeaks, Open House Hobart is an annual architecture program that opens some of Tasmania’s most unique buildings to the public, including private homes and historic buildings across lutruwita (Tasmania).
Last year, Open House Hobart was conducted as a mix of face-to-face and virtual tours, allowing people from across the world to experience all that Open House Hobart has to offer. A series of online talks were also available to tune in to.

Findings are based on a research study that examines the attitudes, satisfaction levels and opportunities for future growth in the client and architect relationship.
The insights support architectural practices in identifying constructive pathways to greater client satisfaction, and the evidence-based data can be used to better shape value propositions for stronger outcomes.
The report demonstrates the client’s perspective on topics such as selection criteria and service expectations, value proposition, performance, and design review.
