The buildings of tomorrow
Item 001 by BlueScope Steel – Colorbond

The buildings of tomorrow

The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) was the first building in Australia fully accredited under the Living Building Challenge (LBC), as well as being the Illawarra’s first six-star Green Star Building. The LBC is arguably the highest built environment sustainability accreditation in the world today with its ambition to encourage buildings to be net zero energy and water, to connect more readily with the natural environment, and provide comfortable and restorative places to live and work.

The SBRC not only embodies sustainable design, but is a “living” laboratory for improving building and material design. The “high-bay” roof is divided into two discrete sections using Colorbond steel in the colour Surfmist and Colorbond Coolmax steel. These materials were chosen for their high solar reflectance (low absorptance) and ability to improve the thermal performance of a building.

The building also meets the high standards demanded by the material and waste requirements of the LBC with the BlueScope materials used being manufactured locally and incorporating recycled content. BlueScope is also committed to sustainable sourcing practices that create, protect and built long-term environmental, social and economic value. steel.com.au

Surround by Laminex: Decorative MDF wall panels
Item 006 by Laminex Australia

Surround by Laminex: Decorative MDF wall panels

Surround by Laminex is a new decorative wall panelling solution that gives architects and designers fresh scope for adding contemporary texture and depth, through the play of light and shadow, to residential and commercial interiors.

The range includes eight profiles in a variety of design styles and sizes, each one crafted from medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and pre-primed, ready to be installed and finished with your chosen paint colour.

A highlight of the range is the selection of contemporary profiles, including: Batten 100, a modern, masculine take on classic timber panelling that features defined boards separated by deep, straight-edged grooves; Demi Round 40, a softly curved profile that lends itself particularly well to half-wall applications when finished with a dado rail; and Scallop 45, an undulating curved surface that will bring a luxurious feel to both modern and classic interiors. The profiles of the Surround by Laminex range work beautifully on their own but can also be paired together on a single surface.

Surround by Laminex also comes in two highly popular “timber board” profiles; Classic VJ 100 and Heritage 150 are equally well-suited to period and modern interior styles. Like the entire range, they’re adaptable to all kinds of applications, including hallways, bedrooms, living spaces, waiting rooms, reception areas, foyers and more.

Surround by Laminex is not just about good looks, as Sacha Leagh-Murray, the general manager of sales and marketing at Laminex, explains: “When conceptualizing Surround by Laminex, quality and ease of application were two key factors,” she says. “The panels are durable and hardwearing, whilst still being easy to install.”

The panels are simple to fix to timber, plasterboard, steel, brick or masonry wall surfaces, locking together with a tongue-and-groove system for an exceptional fit and finish. Because they’re pre-primed, the final step is to apply paint. The result is a highly attractive, impact-resistant wall surface that perfectly integrates with the rest of the interior space.

It’s important to note that the production of Surround by Laminex panels is consistent with the company’s focus on local manufacturing, aiming to reduce the impact of the built environment on our planet’s natural resources.

The panels are made in Australia from MDF that is produced at Laminex’s Gympie manufacturing plant using sustainably sourced local timbers. Local manufacturing allows Laminex to closely monitor quality and craftmanship. surroundbylaminex.com.au

A new facade material has landed
Item 007 by Siniat (formerly Knauf Australia)

A new facade material has landed

Meet EQUITONE [lunara], the new addition to the EQUITONE range of fibre cement materials.

A through coloured, high density material, the panel embodies an honest and pure appearance. With its unique texture, the surface of the panel is determined by a randomized surface treatment, which means no recurring pattern and no two panels being the same.

Each facade is unique.

Naturally occuring colour differences are accentuated by the surface, as the extraordinary look and feel emphasizes the originality of the fibre cement material and forms a consistent and unmistakable aesthetic throughout.

EQUITONE [lunara] can be transformed into any size or shape in the workshop or on-site. The material can also be perforated, engraved, or routed.

Suitable for rear-ventilated curtain facades on all building types and heights and can be easily mounted onto timber or metal substructures using tried and tested fastening systems.

No matter what design options you explore, the nature of EQUITONE assures crisp, monolithic details.

Insights into what clients really want

Insights into what clients really want

What keeps clients up at night? What additional services would they like to see architectural practices provide?

The answers to these questions, along with other candid insights, are contained in the 2021 Client Feedback Report released by the Australian Institute of Architects.

Findings are based on a research study that examines the attitudes, satisfaction levels and opportunities for future growth in the client and architect relationship.

The insights support architectural practices in identifying constructive pathways to greater client satisfaction, and the evidence-based data can be used to better shape value propositions for stronger outcomes.

The report demonstrates the client’s perspective on topics such as selection criteria and service expectations, value proposition, performance, and design review.

Of the findings: clients rank effective communication most important in their relationship with an architect; 61% of respondents prefer fixed price agreements over other fee structures; and most believe that architectural services represent good value. architecture.com.au/archives/news_media_articles/new-report-unearths-candid-insights-into-what-clients-really-want
